Finding Serenity Helps Wellness
Welcome to California’s Central Coast — that soft stretch between land and sea where coastal living naturally supports mental wellness, mindfulness, and a slower way of being.
In Los Osos and Morro Bay, mornings begin slowly. People pay for your coffee before you reach the counter or drive up to the window. Fellow grey (and not grey hairs) at the local gym remember your name — in that I’m glad you’re here.
It is a sleepy, artistic town.
And yet, it is very awake.
Each evening, I take my walk toward the water. I try to time it just right — when the sky begins its gentle unraveling and the light slips below the horizon. I am never alone in this ritual.
There are dog owners sitting quietly at the edge of the pier, leashes loose in their hands, waiting for the sun to dip.
Two guitarists — always different, always the same — strum beneath the eucalyptus trees that curve along the bay. Their music floats out over the water like an offering.
Couples lean into one another.
Runners slow their pace.
Children stop asking for snacks.
Everyone expresses their love for this place differently — and yet the same.
Some photograph it.
Some sing to it.
Some sit in silence before it.
We are all, in our own way, bowing.
What strikes me most is not just the beauty of the sunset — though it is breathtaking — but the collective pause. In a world that feels loud and urgent, this small coastal town gathers nightly to witness something it cannot control.
The sun will set whether we are there or not.
But we come anyway.
Maybe that is what community really is — not just remembering someone’s coffee order, but remembering to look up together. Remembering that light fades and returns. Remembering that beauty is meant to be shared.
On the Central Coast, love looks like presence.
It looks like salt air in your lungs.
It sounds like a guitar under eucalyptus branches.
It feels like belonging.
And every evening, as the sky softens into watercolor, I find myself whispering the same quiet gratitude:
I am so glad I am here.
