Burn Camp, Community & Healing | Utah Chili Cook-Off

Recently, I had the pleasure of volunteering at the University of Utah Firefighters Chili  Cook-Of Fundraiser, an event that brings together firefighters, U of U Nurses, Volunteers, and many more  from across the state of Utah to celebrate something especially near and dear to my heart: Burn Camp.

For the past 20 years, I have volunteered as a yoga instructor for Burn Camp, serving young people ages 6–21 who have experienced burn injuries.

This work holds a special place in my heart, not only because I’m married to a firefighter, but also because I’ve witnessed the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and attention to detail that go into both the medical treatment and ongoing wellness care of burn survivors.

Burn Camp is about so much more than recovery. It’s about connection, resilience, belonging, and creating a community where young people can feel understood, supported, and empowered.

A Special Guest with an Extraordinary Story

This year’s chili cook-off was made even more memorable by the presence of chef Eduardo Garcia, who traveled all the way from Montana with a trailer full of Traeger grills and griddles. He brought his culinary creativity to the event, preparing a delicious chili featuring his signature herb blend and a memorable ingredient: bison tongue-in-cheek.

But Eduardo brought more than his culinary talents. He brought a story of courage, perseverance, and the power of community.

Eduardo is also a former patient of the University of Utah Burn Center. On Saturday, he celebrated the 15th anniversary of his burn injury alongside his Burn Camp family, including the nurses and caregivers who were part of his journey.

It was a beautiful reminder that healing doesn't end when a patient leaves the hospital. The relationships, support, and shared experiences that continue long afterward can make an extraordinary difference in a person's life.

Watch Eduardo’s Journey: Charged

I invite you to watch Charged, the documentary that shares Eduardo’s remarkable journey from a devastating burn injury to recovery, personal transformation, and meaningful work with others who have faced similar challenges.

The film is also available through Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and other streaming services, including some platforms that offer ad-supported viewing.

Eduardo’s story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of finding purpose, connection, and hope along the way.

A Final Thought

Whether it’s the warmth of a pot of chili shared among friends, the dedication of a firefighter, the compassion of a healthcare professional, or the healing touch of a Reiki practitioner, we are reminded that caring for one another is one of the most meaningful things we can do.

Here’s to the people who show up, the communities that lift us, and the courage it takes to heal.

With gratitude and warmth,

Namaste,
Amy
