Survivor Wellness (formerly known as Cancer Wellness House)
“Survivor Wellness is a cancer care community, a sanctuary in the heart of the city”
Meet Jean Smith.
I’ve written about her before. She’s been in our lives forever. She was in our wedding 31 years ago, she’s the God Mother of Benjamin; I wrote about her when we lost Our Gentle Giant and her soul mate, Brian Bob. Remember?
Jean became sick with melanoma the year Cancer Wellness House opened. (AKA: Survivor Wellness). It was 1997 and the news came around the same time I announced I was pregnant with my first born, Benjamin.
She, her husband Kent and her mom Char became dedicated volunteers and recipients to Survivor Wellness services. Her treatment was arduous and long. She lost weight and her hair thinned but her eyelashes grew very long.
There's always gotta be one perk to cancer treatment!
The Survivor Wellness Mission statement is:
“Our mission is to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors, their family members, caregivers and loved ones by providing free and reduced-cost cancer wellness services and support in a welcoming, home-like setting.”
Jean’s treatment lasted about a year. She felt fatigued and worn out throughout most of it, but her fellow employees at the Girl Scout’s of Utah rallied around her. Her mom took up the slack when Kent was called away. And close friends were never far away. Throughout it all, Survivor Wellness was there too.
Overall, when Survivor Wellness needed something or offered something, all three of them showed up. In fact, they supported the first Survivors of the Summit trip!
This year, we celebrate 28 years with Survivors of the Summit, celebrating its 2nd year at our new summit location, Brighton!
JULY 27, 2025 at BRIGHTON RESORT, 8am-3pm
The Executive Director has changed hands a few times since that first time Jean and her family ascended the summit. Dana Levy has brought much back to life.
“SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Good Things Utah) — Dana Levy, Executive Director of Survivor Wellness tells us how we can Honor and support cancer survivors at the 28th annual Survivors at the Summit. Founded in 1997 as “Cancer Wellness House”, with a logo of a blue house on a yellow field with a gold sun. In recent years, our name and logo were changed. This year kicked off with the objective, “bringing back the houses”, bringing the houses back to their logo, for visibility in the community, and a greater capacity to serve cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.
This year, Survivor Wellness is offering over 150 hours a month of free wellness and integrative health care services and support, valued at $10,000 a month. Survivor Wellness is once again a remarkable community resource in the intermountain west.”
